An engaging, youthful cast cannot resuscitate this markedly out-of-date Woody Allen misfire. By Jessica Kiang. Until you watch it and realize it may be significantly more generous than the film merits. It is a retread of territory Allen has extensively covered before, but while the same can be said about almost all of his late-career work, seldom have the gears ground quite so loudly, and never before has the writing felt this chronically out-of-phase with the era it depicts. This is supposedly , but a butler bearing a telegram on a silver salver would seem more plausible than, say, a WhatsApp conversation. Gatsby, apparently borne back ceaselessly into a past where year-olds wear tweed and use a pop-culture lexicon composed entirely of Cole Porter aphorisms, is a brilliant, wealthy but directionless Manhattanite attending leafy, fictional Yardley College. Scenes are blocked unevenly, sometimes cramming actors into unnatural proximity despite the spaciousness of the sets, in an unsuccessful effort, perhaps, to summon some chemistry. Eventually, it becomes quite infuriating that Fanning, especially, can be so lovely and so game and so thoughtlessly abandoned, given no consistent notes to play and sent down the undignified dead-ends of a storyline that has no place to go and nothing to do when it gets there. S o it goes on, the eerie productivity of Woody Allen , who outlived his greatness, and might yet outlive his notoriety. Well, there is some surface narrative drive, one or two pretty good lines and Elle Fanning gives it all of her very considerable intelligence and charm. The setting is New York , which now looks like luxury-tourist city-break destinations, such as Rome or Paris, depicted in his other films. The setting is the present day, but with plenty of weird jazz-age totems and anachronisms. Actually, what it resembles is that particular time in the s when the s were popular. A pretty niche gag for Gen Z, surely? Chalamet is fey and winsome in the role of a wealthy young undergraduate at an upstate liberal arts college, who has the entirely preposterous name of Gatsby Welles. Gatsby is dating Ashleigh Fanning , a peppy, preppy gal with sweaters and short skirts from an earlier age, who as a student journalist has been given the chance to go to Manhattan and interview tortured movie director Roland Pollard Liev Schreiber for the college paper. Ashleigh and Gatsby agree to go together, but the rain inspires romantic adventures; Ashleigh winds up in farcical situations with Pollard, with his screenwriter, Ted Davidoff Jude Law , and with a certain sleazy womanising star called Francisco Vega Diego Luna.
