The musical is inspired by their Grammy -winning collaboration on the bluegrass album Love Has Come for You  and, in turn, the folk story of the Iron Mountain Baby. The musical opened at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. The show began previews at the Cort Theatre on Broadway on February 25, before officially opening on March Despite support by Martin and Brickell,  and occasional appearances by Martin, the musical closed on June 26, after 30 previews and regular performances. Members of the original Broadway cast participated, with Steve Martin and Edie Brickell both hosting and performing. A US national tour was announced in January for the touring season, with casting and route to be announced later. Under the direction of Tara Whitman, the school submitted the show to the International Thespian Society 's "Mainstage" competition. This led to West Orange being one of eight schools invited to perform at the Florida State Thespian Festival, and one of eleven schools invited to perform at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.
